The warehouse contained over one million gallons of whisky and rum, an explosive combination that meant the fire raged out of control for a week. A total of 450 firefighters were called upon to tackle the blaze, which was visible across the entire city. To this day it remains Britain’s worst peacetime fire service disasters. The mosaic mural, created by the pupils of nearby Anderston and St. Patricks primary schools, it commemorates the fourteen members of the Glasgow Fire Service and five members of the Glasgow Salvage Corps who lost their lives.

This small yet touching monument was built to mark the 50th anniversary of the Cheapside Street Fire disaster on 28th March 1960 that broke out in a bonded warehouse.
